Tillery, NC – During the Concerned Citizens of Tillery’s (CCT) reception on Saturday, April 11, 2015 to announce the publication of the organization’s Thirty five years (plus one) publication covering the last ten years of the group’s history, William “Will” Goldsmith was presented the CCT “Chris Stewart History Award” for his work with the organization.  Senator Angela Bryant of Rocky Mount (NC 4th Senatorial District) was presented with a 35th Anniversary hat as she lauded the long history of the organization and the work it has done in so many areas to help the people of not only Tillery but across the state and country.

Gary R. Grant, CCT’s Executive Director says the Chris Stewart History Award was established in 1995 when Chris Stewart, an Oral History PhD candidate at UNC Chapel Hill, worked with the community on uncovering the great history of the New Deal Tillery Resettlement Farms – “Remembering Tillery …A New Deal Resettlement” project and her dedication to the Concerned Citizens of Tillery.  Stewart was the first recipient of the award in 1996; Tom Buller, a Master’s student at the University of Minnesota for his work with CCT and the Black Farmers Movement in 2003; and now Goldsmith as the third recipient.” Grant continued by saying, “CCT takes this and all the awards it has established very seriously and that is why it is not given every year.”

Special thanks go out to Charlie Hill, Jr. of Rocky Mount who provided music for the occasion and to CCT members Dorothy DeBrow, Perline Baggott and Cary White, Jr. for their assistance with the refreshments and to CCT Board member Marilyn High Harris for handling the book purchase table.

35th Books as well as the 25th Anniversary Book are still available and can be purchased for $25.00 each.  All proceeds go to support the continued work of the nonprofit organization.  For additional information or to purchase a book, please contact the CCT office by calling (252) 826-3017, e-mailing tillery@aol.com, or visiting the www.cct78.org website.
